The sun may have set on the leadership of Issa Hayatou after 29 years in the saddle as CAF president, a man of many sides, a hero to some while a villain to others but love it or hate it, he had some incredible facts which no one can deny

1 He was once an athlete, that’s right he was a middle distance runner and basketballer making both the national squads for basketball and athletics

2 Issa Hayatou was once physical education teacher

3 In the year 1974, he became the Secretary General of Cameroon Football Association at the tender age of 28

4 Under his leadership, CAF was the first continent to experiment co-hosting a football tournament, African Cup of Nations which was first co-hosted by Nigeria and Ghana in the year 2000 and Equatorial Guinea and Gabon in the year 2012, Europe followed suit also in the year 2000 with Belgium and Holland jointly hosting the Euro’s

5 He was in power for close to three decades as CAF President from 19988-2017

6 He once contested for FIFA Presidency but lost to Sepp Blatter whom he stood in for the latter as acting president until February 26th 2016 when Gianni Infantino was elected as the new FIFA President

7 He played football at university level and was a member of Cameroon’s national basketball team in the inaugural All Africa Games in Brazzaville in 1965

8 Under his leadership Africa hosted a World Cup tournament on its soil after losing out narrowly four years before to Germany

9 He lost to Ahmad Ahmad of Madagascar by 34-20 votes on March 16th, a day before the Ides of March

10 He belongs to the powerful Hayatou family which are traditional holders of the sultanate
